According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Sympathizer is a cross-cultural satire and espionage thriller that follows the story of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War. In 1975, the protagonist is forced to leave his country and emigrate to the United States, in a community of exiles from California.
