Javier Bardem supports the writers’ strike in Hollywood: “What we do would not exist without them”

Bardem assured that he hopes that the Writers Guild (WGA) and the Alliance of Film and Television Producers (AMPTP) will be able to reach an agreement “based on respect and consideration”, in the face of a situation as complex as the one they are facing.

On May 2, the WGA went on strike after almost two months of failed negotiations with the AMPTP for the renewal of its contract.

The scriptwriters demand better working conditions, an increase in the incentives that streaming platforms pay them to rebroadcast their productions, as well as regulation of creations resulting from artificial intelligence, among other requests.

Since then, late-night talk shows like “The Late Show” or “Saturday Night Live” have stopped airing new episodes and series like “Stranger Things”, “Abbott Elementary” or “Severance” have stopped their development due to the break.

This week, personalities from the world of entertainment such as Fran Drescher (“The Nanny”, 1993), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Encanto”, 2021), or Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”, 20015-2022), among others, they have supported the scriptwriters with their presence in the pickets organized by the union to put pressure on the studios.

Bardem is part of the human version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” soon to be released on May 26. In fiction, the 54-year-old actor plays King Triton, the father of the rebellious teenage mermaid Ariel, who is played by African-American actress Halle Bailey.
