Sandra Hüller aims to win the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival

The German Sandra Hüller aims for the acting award for Cannes for her role as a writer whose husband dies under strange circumstances in “Anatomy of a Fall”, presented this Monday in the festival competition, although she would also deserve it for her wife as a Nazi in “The Zone of Interest”.

Two very different roles that demonstrate the enormous quality of an actress who already won the European Film Award in 2016 for “Toni Erdmann” and the best actress at the Berlinale in 2006 for “Requiem”.

Hüller bears the full weight of “Anatomie d’une chute” on his shoulders, a film directed by the French Justine Triet, which shows a German writer who lives in the French Alps and is suspected of the death of her husband because of a fall from the top of his mountain chalet. And the only witnesses to her are her blind son and a dog.

“The dog is the only innocent character” of a film in which everyone is hiding something, said the actress, delighted with a complex character and “flattered” because the director wrote the script with her in mind.

In this regard, the director acknowledged that when she writes a script, she often has an actor or actress in her mind and, in the case of Hüller, “she has something complex that fed my spirit.”

“Sandra plays with her body, I don’t know how to explain it, when she shoots her body doesn’t totally belong to her, she is who she is on the set”explained about the choice of the German actress.

Something that did not put any additional pressure on Hüller, because Triet “has a very pleasant way of working,” said the actress. “Some filmmakers should be inspired by it,” he added.

The most difficult part of her work on this film was something that also happens in real life, which is finding the right channel to let her emotions out.

“Everybody on this planet has the ability to feel everything, what you have to know is how to open the channel to show those emotions, staying in a space of safety, and that is the space that Justine built for us.” Hüller explained.

From that moment everything was easy, you just had to open the channel and put everything on the table, which in this story is mainly the feeling of guilt.

A guilt that is not clear in an obvious game of ambiguity by the director, who wanted to contrast the atmosphere of the house, in which it is not really known what has happened, with that of the court that judges the woman and that is a place that obsessively seeks the truth.

“The film focuses on a child -the son of the writer, played by Milo Machado Graner- who has a lot of weight on his shoulders, he finds himself almost in the position of a jury. For me, the most important thing in the film is that he has to decide if his mother is innocent or not and we will never know if his testimony was true or not.”explains the director.

Triet loves fiction precisely “because it is a place where you can hide the truth” and that is what he has done with “Anatomy of a Fall”. “I am fascinated by the idea that the deeper you look into an image, the less you see,” said the director.
