Ryan Gosling on criticism of his role in Barbie: “There are many other Kens to play with”

The actor ryan gosling assured that Ken, his character in the new movie of “Barbie”had always been unimportant in the history of the plastic doll and mocked criticism of his interpretation, considering that they showed the “hypocrisy” of the followers.

“Has anyone ever thought about Ken before this? (…) no, we haven’t cared about Ken all this time (…) If you ever cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cares. So your hypocrisy is exposed. That is why the story of him must be told ”, the actor told the American magazine GQ on Wednesday.

Gosling’s statements come after the 42-year-old actor was criticized on social networks for being considered “too old” to play the handsome boyfriend of the multitalented plastic doll in the film directed by Greta Gerwig.

“I would say if people don’t want to play my Ken, there are plenty of other Kens to play with.”said the Canadian, who shares credits with Margo Robbie, 32, who is Barbie in the film that will hit theaters on July 21.

Gosling, the protagonist of films such as “First Man” (2018) or “The Gray Man” (2022), also said that one of the reasons why he accepted the role of a doll for children was the possibility of working on a project that promoted female roles and talent.

In addition, he confessed that bringing Ken to life gave him the opportunity to reconnect with his youth and that version of himself from which he had distanced himself when he began acting in more serious films.

“There’s something about this Ken that I really think relates to that version of myself. The guy who wore Hammer pants, danced in the mall, smelled like Drakkar Noir and had Aqua Net bangs. I owe a lot to that guy (…) the reality is that he is the reason I have everything that I have”, said.

In the rest of the interview, the actor from “The Notebook” (2004) spoke, among other topics, about his career, his taste for independent cinema, as well as his beginnings on television with Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the program “The Mickey Mouse Club”.
