“Spider-Man” returns to the cinema and raises a question: Has it gone too far with animation? Directors respond

Doubts as to whetherspider-man” (“Spider-Man”) could function as a saga of animated films, apart from its live-action film adaptations, they disappeared with the success of “Into the Spider-Verse” (2018), which not only multiplied its earnings in the box office and triumphed among critics, but it took the Oscar for Best Animated Film, prevailing over “The Incredibles 2”, “Isle of Dogs” and other contenders.

Hence, its sequel, “Through the Spider-Verse” (“Across the Spider-Verse”), generates so much expectation. In theaters June 1, the film follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a teenager who replaces Peter Parker as Spider-Man after he is killed by a villain. In the first film, he met heroes from other universes and this sequel brings them back, where Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider Woman, who has family conflicts, stands out.

Both (Gwen and Miles) are at a point in their lives where they are learning to be independent. And with that comes the conflict between them and their parents,” Steinfeld said. “That’s a big part of my character and it has a lot to do with what brings the two of them (her and Miles) even closer than in the previous movie.”, he added.

But while Gwen is friendly, others are antagonistic. Proof is Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), the hero of the year 2099 who appears in the trailers as an imposing and dangerous figure. In conversation with this newspaper, Steinfeld highlighted Isaac’s work, considering it one of the greatest luxuries of working on this saga.

Spider-Man wouldn’t exist without the work of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who created the hero in his Marvel comics debut in 1962. But the new movie requires other talents, both on the writing and producing side and on the direction case.

The film has been written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, a creative duo specializing in comedy, but also in getting the most out of concepts. With work at the forefront, they both wrote this movie to take Spider-Man to the next level. Anyone who grew up with this story, be it comics, animated series, or movies, will be familiar with the conflict the writers bring up.

In this sense, both are also in favor of an improvement in the working conditions of their union. El Comercio approached them in relation to the current writers’ strike in the United States, for which no series or film is being written. Specifically, they answered if they feel like they are in a real-life Spider-Verse, considering that writers from different fictional universes join forces to defeat an adversary.

It has been very interesting to see people from all over the industry come together and fight for these issues.Miller said. “One of the hopes is the community that is strengthened and developed among the people who create this for a living.Lord added.

But a movie doesn’t just come from the script, because the role must go to the screen and maintain a clear tone and rhythm. There comes the work of directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, who balance not only multiple characters, but universes and visual styles. That’s where our question to the filmmakers was.

—This movie does things I never thought were possible with animation. From a management point of view, did you ever think if you were going too far?

I don’t think we thought of that, we thought we were going where the story needed to go emotionally. There were several times where we tried things that were not emotionally correct, and we changed coursePowers said. “If you don’t get nervous in the process of trying these things, then you’re going down the road too safe, you’re going into a rut. The nerves of trying something new visually is part of what makes us do this.”, added Dos Santos for his part.

Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). Two heroes who, for whatever reason, will collide.
