Lima PUCP Film Festival: Leos Carax as a guest, Cannes titles, lots of Peruvian cinema, and more

As every year, surely the number of films that we have yet to see will be greater than the ones that we will actually see. Because there is a lot to see at the PUCP Lima Film Festival, and you will have to know how to choose wisely. Its 27th edition, which will run from August 10 to 18, has as its main course the selection of Peruvian films within the Fiction Competition.

There will be four, an important figure: “Diógenes” by Leonardo Barbuy, “Historias de shipibos” by Omar Forero”, “The erection of Toribio Bardelli” by Adrián Saba, and “Yana-Wara” by Tito and Óscar Catacorathe tape that the latter left unfinished before his tragic death in 2021.

In the documentary category, there will be only one national participant: “Classroom 8″ by Héctor Gálvez. While the Made in Peru section will feature titles by Hans Matos, Maga Zevallos, Felipe Esparza, Gonzalo Ladines, among others.

More Peruvian production? Well, the opening film will be a restored version of “The Green Wall” by Armando Robles Godoy –in the year of its centenary–. A recovery that has promoted the PUCP Film Library, along with other films by Nora de Izcue, Silvia Kantor, Grupo Chaski, Chicho Durant, and more.

CROSSING BORDERS

Of course, and beyond the local content, the festival is nourished by important contributions from abroad. For example, the tribute that will be made to the French filmmaker Leos Carax (“Boy Meets Girl”, “Bad Blood”, “Annette”), a key figure of contemporary seventh art, who will arrive in Lima. And there will also be tributes for the Spanish Esther García (producer of Pedro Almodóvar) and for Lita Stantic (Argentinean producer of films such as “La ciénaga” or “Errante”).

In the Acclaimed section, which usually brings titles highly anticipated by moviegoers, films that come from important festivals are announced, such as the latest Cannes winner, “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet. Other must-sees are “Fallen Leaves” by Aki Kaurismaki”, “Extraña forma de vida” by Almodóvar, “Asteroid City” by Wes Anderson, “About Dry Grasses” by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, “Perfect Days” by Win Wenders and “Il Sol Dell’Avvenire” by Nanni Moretti.

Other recommendations? Write them down and look them upbecause scattered among various sections are “Eureka” by Lisandro Alonso, “Los delinquents” by Rodrigo Moreno, “Ghost Portraits” by Kleber Mendonça Filho, “El eco” by Tatiana Huezo, a retrospective by Jean-Luc Godard, “20,000 species of bees” by Estibaliz Urresola, “Corsage” by Marie Kreutzer, and more.

And of course, there will be a series of parallel activities, such as talks, master classes, exhibitions, workshops, and more. In addition, there will be some functions that can be seen virtually within Peruvian territory, as a way of honoring the motto of this edition: Let’s be protagonists.
