Lula admits that he will offer positions to center-right parties to guarantee governability

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaadmitted this Tuesday that he is negotiating the support of the traditional center-right parties for his Government in exchange for positions in the Cabinet to guarantee governability in Brazil.

It is normal that, if these parties want to support us, they also want to participate in the Government. And we must find a place to accommodate them and, in this way, give the Government peace of mind in the votes that interest us in Congress”, said the progressive leader in his weekly broadcast on social networks.

Lula’s government already has the support of important center and center-right parties, such as the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), which allow it to have a weak majority in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

Congress has so far approved the main projects proposed by the head of state, such as the tax reform, but in voting it needed the support of legislators from the center-right parties that are not yet members of the Executive.

Lula’s intention is to add to the parties that make up the so-called “centered”, as the set of center and center-right formations that dominate Congress and that tend to align themselves according to the advantages offered by the government of the day is known.

The president admitted that he is negotiating specifically with the Progressive Party (PP) and with Republicanstwo of those who supported the failed re-election campaign of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro and the last led by pastors of influential evangelical churches.

He also said that he is negotiating with the leaders of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Union Brazilwho did not support either Lula or Bolsonaro in the 2022 elections, but who have leaders who have been characterized as tough opponents of the progressive government, such as the senator and former judge Sergio Moro.

I don’t want to talk to the ‘centrao’ as an organization. I want to talk with the PP, I want to talk with the Republicans, with the PSD and with the Unión Brasil”, said the president.

But he clarified that it will be the head of state who decides the ministries that he will offer to the parties that decide to support his government and that he will not accept the pressures of those formations, which have expressed an appetite for important funds and which manage large budgets such as Health or Social Development.

It is not the party that wants to come to the Government that chooses the ministry. The one who chooses the ministry is the President of the Republic; The one who indicates ministers and the one who offers portfolios is the President of the Republic. And it seems entirely possible to me. We will discuss that in the next few days. I am not worried. I haven’t concluded any conversation with anyone yet“, he claimed.
