Shakira will become the first Latina to receive MTV’s Video Vanguard Award

Colombian singer Shakira will become the first Latin American artist to receive the “Video Vanguard Award” granted by MTV in its annual delivery of the “Video Music Awards (MVA)”, where she will also perform on September 12 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey .

This recognition has previously been received by stars such as Madonna, David Bowie, The Beatles together with the director Richard Lester, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé or Jennifer Lopez, among others, according to a statement from the MTV television network.

“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence with her unique skill and musical talent. She is a reference for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music ”, said Bruce Gillmer, head of music at Paramount, the company that owns MTV.

The award-winning singer could also add other awards to her long list of recognitions that night, as she is nominated in three categories: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for “TQG” with her compatriot Karol G and Best Latin Video, in the latter with double nomination for “TQG” and “Acrostic”.

Shakira’s award and nominations add to a successful year for the Colombian star, who debuted as the first female singer to chart in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 with a Spanish-language song for “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53” and repeating a month later with “TQG”, remember the statement.

Shakira has already received four VMA awards, the first of them in 2000 in the International Viewer’s Choice category (North Latin America), the same award she repeated in 2002. Her next awards were in 2006 with her hit “Hips Don’t Lie” and in 2007 for “Beautiful Liar”, a collaboration with Beyoncé.

The Colombian will once again take the stage at the MTV Awards this year, 17 years after her last performance and 18 years after her first performance entirely in Spanish at the VMAs with her hit “La tortura” alongside Spanish Alejandro Sanz.

The singer-songwriter recently topped the Billboard magazine Latin Pop Airplay Chart, an achievement never before achieved in the chart’s nearly three-decade history.

To this are added 14 Guinness records with “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53″ as the most listened to Latin song on Spotify in 24 hours and in a week, the most viewed on YouTube in 24 hours and the fastest to reach 100 million. views on YouTube, the statement also highlights.
