There is Arequipa Festival 2023: learn about the El Comercio conversations

He There is Arequipa Festival is back, and as always, it promises to be a celebration of culture and intellect that offers an opportunity to explore fundamental issues of contemporary society from experts. In this ninth edition, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in more than 100 activities over four days, distributed in eleven venues. Each of these activities promises to be a window to a world of knowledge and reflection.

Among the urgent issues that will be addressed is the environmental issue, which will occupy a central place in the festival, with the participation of prominent experts such as Pedro Favaron, the Spanish expeditionary Martín Ibarrola, the environmental activist Yanesha Vabi Miguel Toribio and Josefa Sánchez from the Zoque people from Chimalapas, Mexico. Together, they will explore the challenges we face in preserving our environment.

Another topic of interest is artificial intelligence, which will also have its space at the Hay Festival Arequipa, with conversations about the contemporary challenges that this technology poses. Richard Firth-Godbehere, historian of emotions, philosopher Daniel Innerarity and expert on the relationship between technology and power, Marta Peirano, will discuss this crucial topic in our current world.

Regarding the participation of this newspaper in the festival, three conversations stand out that address topics of interest to the public. The first will take place on Friday, November 10 and will focus on the El Comercio Archive, which digitized 184 years of journalistic activity. This titanic project will be presented by Juan Aurelio Arévalo Miró Quesada, journalistic director of the newspaper, together with the main editor of the El Dominical supplement, Enrique Planas. “We are going to show how the process of digitizing the El Comercio newspaper archive was and some interesting findings that we found along the way. From articles written by important figures in our history to how events of relevance to the country were covered.”Advances Arévalo Miró Quesada.

Gastronomy also makes an appearance as a fundamental pillar of Peruvian culture with the conversation that will be held on November 11 by the editor of Somos magazine, Nora Sugobono, who will meet with the chefs Mónica Huerta, Alfonso Núñez and Erick Díaz to discuss how spicy food and new formats define Arequipa gastronomy today. “We want to discuss the future of Arequipa cuisine in the face of internationalization and how this gastronomy can be exported”mentions Sugobono.

For his part, Enrique Planas, within the framework of the 70th anniversary of El Dominical, will share his reflections on cultural journalism in the 21st century with Sergio del Molino, a prominent author and essayist from Spain, and Fernando Gómez, journalist from El Tiempo from Colombia on Sunday, November 12. “We will trace the panorama of contemporary cultural journalism, a genre always at risk due to the loss of space and possibilities for the future”concludes Planas.
