Hayao Miyazaki will take “a break” after the Oscar for “The Boy and the Heron”

The famous Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki He will take “a break” again after his latest film, ‘The Boy and the Heron’, culminates the awards season, which this Sunday takes him to the 96th edition of the Oscars, where he is nominated in the animation category .

“Director Hayao Miyazaki is going to take a break now, we’ll see what he focuses on after all this”Kiyofumi Nakajima, executive producer of ‘The Boy and the Heron’ and director of operations of the famous Ghibli studio, announced this Sunday to EFE from the Oscars red carpet.

This is the second time that the Japanese animation master has decided to take a break in his career. The first time was in 2013, after premiering ‘The Wind Rises’ at the Venice Film Festival.

However, he returned five years later with a short, ‘Boro the Caterpillar’ and in 2023 with this ‘The Boy and the Heron’, which earned him his fourth Oscar nomination, after those for ‘The Wind Rises’, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ (2004) and ‘Spirited Away’ (2001), for which he won his first statuette.

In 2014 he also received an honorary Oscar for his career in animated film and his work as co-founder of the Ghibli studios.

‘The Boy and the Heron’ tells the story of a 12-year-old orphan boy who manages to connect with his mother through a new dimension when he moves to a new city and meets a talking heron.

The film competes this year with the film ‘Robot Dreams’, by Spanish Pablo Berger, as well as with the media phenomenon ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’, from Sony Pictures, ‘Elemental’, from Pixar, and ‘Nimona ‘, from the Netflix factory.

“Each of the animated films nominated this year has a different proposal, the winner will depend on the members of the Hollywood Academy, but it will be well deserved,” Nakajima said about his rivals.

If it wins the statuette, it would be the second non-English speaking film in history capable of winning in the best animated film category after ‘Spirited Away’.
