The days ahead are – traditionally – those when the thermometer rises the highest in France, as in the entire northern hemisphere. But at the end of July this year, in a significant part of the country, the temperature should remain below the seasonal norm. Only the extreme southeast, including the Alpes-Maritimes, which was still under orange vigilance this Saturday, were able to avoid it.
Météo France predicts the hottest day, at least from Sunday to Wednesday, from 22 to 24 ° C in Paris and Nantes. This is less than the “normal”, namely the average for the last thirty years, respectively 25.7°C and 25.1°C. Tuesday can be the “coolest” day across the country, especially in its northern half.
This situation is explained by “an extensive zone of low pressure over the British Isles and Scandinavia, which favors flows from the west and northwest,” says Frederic Nathan, forecaster for Météo France. This influx of ocean air results in cooler temperatures.

Rain is also expected in the northwest, sometimes in large amounts. According to the Arôme forecast model, cumulative rainfall could reach 50 mm locally in the northwest of the country by Sunday evening.
“From Tuesday, weather conditions will remain volatile in the northern half, particularly off the English Channel, with relatively cool westerly flow for the season and downpours that could still affect many regions,” reports The Weather Channel.
This Sunday in Athens up to 45°C
Being below normal for a season in no way contradicts the global warming trend. The weather, i.e. the weather needed today and in the coming days, must be distinguished from climate when observing data over a long period. June has become the second hottest month ever recorded in France, and the average temperature in July is now higher than “normal” on the national scale.
Temperatures will also remain well above seasonal “normal” for the next few days in other regions of the world, such as the central United States. In Greece this Sunday, the thermometer may approach 45 ° C in the center of the country. “When you look at the whole globe, there are always places where you are higher, or others where you are higher. It all depends on the air masses and their location,” concludes Frederic Nathan.
