Peruvian scientist is awarded for developing new varieties of plants using nuclear energy

Peruvian researcher Luz Rayda Gómez-Pando has been awarded for her work in the development of new varieties of plants using nuclear energy. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) awarded her the Prize to Women in Plant Breeding by Induction of Mutations.

“There are very few researchers who do genetic improvement of plants in our country. We need more professionals to develop to face climate change ”, the scientist told the Andean Agency.

It is the second time that Luz Rayda Gómez-Pando, who is a senior professor in the Phytotechnics Department of the Faculty of Agronomy and head of the Cereals and Native Grains Program of the La Molina National Agrarian University (UNALM), receives this important award.

Thanks to her knowledge in nuclear energy, the researcher has developed varieties of kiwicha, barley, wheat, among other plants, since the 1980s. And in that work he has contributed directly to the farmers of the central and southern highlands of the country.

Shortly after leaving her professional activity, the researcher highlights that One of her legacies – she affirms – is having contributed to the creation of the UNALM Germplasm Bank, one of the most complete in the country.
