A solar flare hit Earth this month

A mass of solar material that erupted from the Sun on October 9, 2021, reached Earth on October 12, evidence of the reactivation of the cycle of activity in our star.

The Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME, raised the Kp index, a measure of disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field,. The Kp index levels range from 0 (quiet) to 9 (strong).

The CME was associated with an M1.6-class solar flare from Active Region 2882 that peaked on October 9 at 6:38 UTC (1:38). M-class flares are one-tenth the size of the most intense, X-class flares. An M2 is twice as intense as an M1, an M3 is three times as intense, etc.

As reported by NASA, the flare was also detected by the space agency’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory-Ahead Observatory, or the STEREO-A spacecraft.

STEREO-A also detected the CME from its vantage point far from Earth. The initial velocity of the CME was estimated by NASA’s Moon-to-Mars Space Weather Operations Office at approximately
