“A sun with protein”, the social project that brings food to people in extreme poverty

There are people who make this world worth living. As is already known, the Covid-19 pandemic intensified poverty rates in Peru. According the technical report Evolution of Monetary Poverty 2009 – 2020*, presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in May 2021monetary poverty reached 30.1% of the population in 2020, which is equivalent to 9 million 820 thousand Peruvians.

The INEI specified that the “Poverty Line is the monetary equivalent of the cost of a basic basket of food and non-food consumption, which for the year 2020 amounted to 360 soles per month per inhabitant, which means that the person whose monthly expenditure is less than S/ 360 is considered poor”.

On the other hand, the same agency pointed out that to calculate the level of the Extreme Poverty Line, only the cost of the basic basket of food consumption is considered, which had a value of S / 191 per person, that is, it is considered in extreme poverty. to people whose monthly expenses do not cover the value of the basic basket of food consumption.

In this framework, “A sun with protein” arises, an initiative that brings this food of animal origin to people in extreme poverty. The project is carried out by a group of good people who came together to help those most in need. In less than a year they have managed to provide more than 20,000 servings of this food to the communal pots of Pamplona Alta, in San Juan de Miraflores.

“A country that does not eat well is doomed to underdevelopment. If you eat well, you don’t think well. If only 8 or 9 percent of the population donated a sol, the problems of anemia and malnutrition in the country would be solved because these millions of people in extreme poverty who do not have access to protein would be covered. simple and the support of common pots, donating a sol – which is less than a ticket or a soda – we can collaborate “Emilio Pérez de Armas, who is part of this initiative, tells Provecho de El Comercio.

With the money they collect weekly they buy fish, chicken, eggs, beef, blood, etc. These purchases are made by the Comboni nuns and the leaders of the common pots. The entire process is published on the Facebook of this organization.

“A sun with protein” has been working with four common pots from Pamplona Alta and they have just added two more. However, they hope to be able to reach all of Peru. The common pots that want to participate can get in touch through social networks.

“The Comboni sisters are our contacts with the common pots. They have a lot of credibility. It was key to involve them in the project. They are in charge of making a serious filter. We check that there is seriousness in the people who ask for it and that the common pot enjoys a good reputation. They can call us from all regions”, Pérez de Armas ends.
