How to store onions so they last longer?

Onions are the base of many dressings, in some dishes it is used in large quantities, but in others only half. If you are one of those who buy many onions to keep your pantry full, here are some recommendations so that you can store it better:

The onion, by itself, is a vegetable that keeps for many days in an optimal way, but the ideal is to keep it in cool, dry places and preferably away from light. If you’re one of those people who tends to keep vegetables together, it’s best to keep potatoes somewhere else, because onions give off ethylene gas and will cause them to rot. To make them last for weeks or months, it is best to store them in the shell.

When it comes to storage, keeping them in a cold environment like a refrigerator will cause the starch in the onion to turn into sugar, which will make them softer. In addition, the onion very quickly absorbs moisture from the environment and this also causes softening. Of course, if the onion is already open, it is best to store it in an airtight glass container.

In the case of Chinese onion or sweet onions, cold is undoubtedly the best option because this will make it serve much longer. However, there is a recommendation that you should not lose sight of, wrap each onion with a paper towel so that moisture is absorbed.

If your idea is to freeze the onions to use within a few months, it is best to do it chopped or sliced in an airless bag. It is precise to say that these onions will serve to cook and not to serve them raw.

With these tips you can keep your onions for a few weeks and even for a few months.
