Veganism, Peruvian vegetable meats that do not have octagons

Last year Ipsos Global Advisor conducted a survey in several countries around the world, and asked them who were willing to reduce their meat consumption for environmental reasons. Peru was the country where more people said they were willing to reduce their meat consumption due to environmental issues. 64% of people indicated that they would stop eating or reduce their consumption to reduce climate change. This coincides with the trend that there are more and more plant-based alternatives in Peru. One of them is Veganería, a Peruvian brand that offers flavored vegetable meats that are not high in sodium.

eat more plants

According to the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), increasing the global market share of alternative proteins from the current 2% to 8% by 2030, it could produce an emissions reduction equivalent to decarbonizing 95% of the aviation industry. The production of animal meat is one of the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and water and air pollution.

Besides, Excessive consumption of animal meat has been linked to diseases such as diabetes, some types of cancer, and heart disease. Plant-based meats are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than animal meat, making them a healthier option for those looking to reduce their meat intake. These vegetable options are not only for vegetarians or vegans, but for anyone who wants to make a positive impact on the environment and their health. Following this line, Veganism offers soy-based meats with different flavors, being an option for all those who want to make a change to help the environment, animals and take care of their health.

Veganism

The nutritionist Sylvia Rodriguez, a specialist in plant-based food, together with her partners Diego Bustamante and Miguel Dávila decided to bet on an alternative protein, based on soybeans that had Peruvian flavors such as pachamanca and anticucho, as well as other new options for many palates. Peruvians like curry and oriental.

The idea of Veganism was born when Sylvia, having many patients during the pandemic, did not have much time to cook and realized that there was not a product on the market that would provide a good amount of protein, that was rich but not high in sodium.

I had a trip to the United States and saw that there were quite a few flavored tofu options. There was nothing similar here, yes burgers, but no meats. I ate too much soy meat, but it didn’t taste as rich as it didn’t have time to marinate. So I was eating very basic, and I got together with a friend who is a chef, and I told him that I needed an amazing flavor option that is frozen to just heat it up and put it on the plate. It would save me a lot of time and I think it’s a very good option if you want to have a good portion of protein, whether or not you eat a plant-based diet“, account. And so the idea was born, which months later became a reality, after several taste and texture tests.

Sylvia Rodriguez founder of La Veganería, a meatless alternative with real and sustainable ingredients.

Diego Bustamante, chef and partner, was in charge of the flavors, while Sylvia Rodriguez made sure that no vegetable meat was high in sodium or any additive, so it would be safe for her patients with any disease to consume without problems.

We were adjusting. Diego with the flavor, while I recommended what things we could reduce, fats, sodium, among others. We have two meats with soy sauce, but they are not high in sodium as many might believe. It was possible to have a rich and sodium-free product. He is the flavor expert who managed to lower it, but without losing the flavor, so that’s how we started. And now, we fully start in 2023 after many tests, after reaching an agreement because there are three of us partners in these Veganería meats”, complements Sylvia.

The flavors

La Veganería has four flavors: oriental, curry, pachamanca and anticucho. Flavors very different from each other that makes them very versatile when cooking. They all come in vacuum-sealed bags in cardboard boxes, where you will find a list of ingredients with all the inputs used as well as a nutritional table to know the exact amount of protein they have. Each box makes three servings and they have between 19 to 21 grams of protein per serving, it is as if you were eating animal meat, but without the consequences that it brings to the environment, animals and health.

In addition, they are done between four and seven minutes. You can make them in the frying pan, in the pot, in the honor, in the air fryer or if you don’t have any time, in the microwave for three or four minutes depending on the power of the equipment. The nutritionist recommends heating these vegetable meats in a pan and accompanying them with your favorite carbohydrates, such as potatoes, rice or noodles, and with a fresh or cooked salad.
