Churro Day: Doña Churrita, the brand that will surprise you with its filling flavors

Crispy, sweet, warm and perfect for any occasion, churros are a dessert that has conquered the entire world. For this reason, every November 11, an international festival is celebrated so that adults and children can enjoy them. An alternative to enjoy this dessert with a variety of fillings is Doña Churrita, a brand that takes advantage of the creativity of its founder, Erick Sierra, to create new and interesting presentations.

First it is good to remember that Spanish churros are different from the classic star-shaped churros that you can enjoy. It is a special dough, which goes through a particular process to have the delicious texture when cooked and is filled with different options, the most classic being blancmange, pastry cream and chocolate.

Doña Churrita emerged as a brand in the middle of the pandemic, in May 2020. “I was interested in trying this dessert because my family, on my paternal side, grew up in the Center of Lima and that is the district where it is a classic to eat these churros, they were part of the lonche tradition,” explains Sierra.

Thus, in a small space inside a relative’s bakery, this adventure began. Of course, since these were difficult times, the entire process was in charge of the founder. “In that space he made the churros, fried them, packaged them and I even delivered them myself. Then, over time, the idea was to professionalize the business and offer an increasingly better product,” he recalls.

Almost a year and a half after its inauguration, Erick was encouraged to try his luck at another space, also located in San Borja, which would allow him to receive clients and, later, expand his menu with diverse offers.

“With this opportunity we were able to grow our menu. Currently, in addition to churros, we offer traditional sweets such as mazamorra morada, arroz con leche and picarones. But, we also have other options such as cakes, cheesecakes, juices and 18 flavors of ice cream,” comments Sierra of the proposal that today can also be enjoyed in express modules located in the Real Plaza Puruchuco, La Rambla and Megaplaza.

Our verdict

Without a doubt, these are one of the best churros we have tried. Don’t get us wrong, visiting the Center of Lima, standing in line to buy a churro and enjoying it on the way is a no-loss plan, but Doña Churrita emerges as an attractive opportunity to share them with our loved ones and dare to taste new flavors.

The creativity of this brand has no limits and that is why, in honor of Churro Day 2023, they will launch a new flavor: the mocca filling, ideal for coffee lovers due to its combination of toasted aromas and creaminess within a fried dough.

The dough of the churros, even if they are delivered by delivery, arrives with the perfect proportion of crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The powdered sugar gives it that old-fashioned touch that is so popular and the fillings are generous without being cloying. You can tell that each filling was well thought out and there is something for everyone. If you are one of the classic lovers, the manjar blanco is mild, with its milky taste and the ideal point. On the other hand, if you are one of those who ventures to try different things, hazelnut is an ideal option. For those who enjoy Peruvian food, the lucuma filling is an unbeatable variety. The use of quality ingredients is noticeable, the lucuma flavor is effectively felt and the texture is succulent. You can also enjoy flavors like custard, chocolate, and passion fruit.
