Unrest after Nael’s death: Elisabeth Bourne promises “several measures” October 9

Announcements in exactly one month. Elisabeth Borne will present “several measures” on October 9 in response to the urban riots that rocked France at the start of the summer. These announcements will be made during a meeting of the Interministerial Committee of Cities scheduled for that day, she told the prefects this Friday.

“Our response must be global. Of course, there are issues of security and public order, but in a broader sense – respect for authority, integration, education, the fight against instability and social diversity,” explained the Prime Minister, receiving all the prefects in Matignon.

“You held on”

On this matter, “I will have the opportunity to discuss with local stakeholders (…),” she clarified, hoping that the “multi-year aspect” of the next city contracts “will be strengthened.” “Despite the intensity of the violence, you held on. By directing the actions of the police, you ensured the rapid restoration of republican order everywhere,” the head of government greeted the state representatives.

The Prime Minister maintained the organization of the Interministerial Committee of Cities on 30 June, but this coincided with the third night of urban violence – after the death of young Nael, killed by a policeman in Nanterre. The head of government was unable to resolve long-term issues.

She then promised to “support the recovery” but said that “the emergency is first and foremost a return to calm and republican order.” This urban violence will also be the subject of discussion within a special National Council for Regeneration (CNR), the Elysee Palace announced on Thursday. “The President of the Republic wants, following the results of the mass unrest, to organize work in this format (the CNR) with the state, communities, and civil society,” the presidency indicated.
