‘A decisive step’ to include abortion in the Constitution: Behind the scenes of the Senate’s ‘yes’

It’s 8 pm on the grounds of the Luxembourg Palace, senators on the left and some on the right are standing up to applaud. The Senate, by a vote of 267 to 50, just voted for a constitutional revision bill aimed at including “the guaranteed freedom of women to seek abortion.” This opens up the possibility of its inclusion in the French constitution as soon as Parliament meets in Congress at Versailles this Monday, March 4th.

“I am committed to making women’s freedom to have an abortion irreversible by enshrining it in the Constitution. After the National Assembly, the Senate is taking a decisive step, which I welcome,” X (ex-Twitter) Emmanuel Macron quickly commented, confirming that he would convene Congress on March 4. Chief of Staff Gérard Larcher, who presided over the closing of the session, was informed of this shortly before by the Secretary General of the Elysée Palace, Alexis Kohler.
