“Disgust.” Cholet Mayor Gilles Bourdoulay announced to Ouest-France that he was withdrawing his candidacy, despite having made it to the second round of the snap legislative elections in the fifth district of Maine-et-Loire.
The LR-RN alliance candidate, who came in second with 30.54%, had to face the leader of the presidential majority candidate, Denis Masseglia, with 33.7%, in the second round. The triangle was closed by the candidate of the New Popular Front, France Moreau, who received 21.33% of the votes.
“Frustrated by a sickening election campaign that insults democracy and our fellow citizens, I have decided to return home. There will be no other comment other than to appeal against the illegal actions committed by the candidate,” Gilles Bourdoulais wrote in a statement published by the newspaper. The mayor of Cholet, a member of parliament from 2002 to 2017, was severely beaten in his own city.
Name mentioned in the debate
Gabriel Attal quoted Gilles Bourdoulay during the latest debate between the Prime Minister, RN President Jordan Bardella and PS leader Olivier Faure for his discriminatory remarks against Travellers and Hitler.
In 2014, the mayor of Cholet was found guilty of “apologizing for crimes against humanity” for saying that “Hitler may not have killed enough” during an argument with the Travellers. The conviction was overturned in 2015 by the Court of Cassation.
I am going to file a complaint against the Prime Minister who made defamatory statements in front of millions of people.
