Wolfsburg accompanied PSG in their pain for the comeback suffered against Real Madrid

The Champions League is an exciting tournament and this Tuesday a chapter was written that will be remembered: Real Madrid came from behind against PSG and eliminated them from the tournament in the round of 16. Despite the fact that the ‘Merengues’ were always in an unfavorable context, they knew how to react and prevail 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

After the final whistle from referee Danny Makkelie, the Madrid team effusively celebrated this new achievement in their history. However, it is worth mentioning that it is not the first time that the ‘White House’ manages to turn around a result and one of the most remembered occurred in 2016, against Wolfsburg in Germany.

In that quarter-final series, the ‘Lobos’ won 2-0 at home in the first leg, with goals from Ricardo Rodríguez and Maximilian Arnold. The great disadvantage for Real Madrid seemed to finalize the elimination, but a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the spectacular comeback in Spain.

Now against PSG, the one in charge of scoring the triplet for the ‘Merengues’ was Karim Benzema, giving the story greater similarity. Due to this, Wolfsburg decided to accompany those led by Mauricio Pochettino in their pain over elimination: they shared a popular meme of two characters, with the shield of both clubs, giving each other a hug. The post immediately went viral.

Pochettino criticized the VAR

After PSG’s elimination, coach Mauricio Pochettino spoke at a press conference and stressed that history could be different if VAR intervened in Karim Benzema’s first goal, since he considered that there was a foul.

There really is a feeling of a lot of injustice for the goal conceded. It was a clear foul by Benzema against Donnarumma. From there he made everyone’s emotional state change. We have not managed our emotions well after conceding that goal and we were too exposed against Real Madrid”, explained the DT at a press conference.

I cannot consider a mistake when there was a foul and it was very clear. I speak of this after having seen the images at least 30-40 times, with different cameras and different angles”, added the Argentine strategist.

In the same way, Mauricio Pochettino criticized referee assistants in the technological area: “I don’t classify this action as a mistake by the goalkeeper, this is football and when you play in this competition, which is the highest at the continental level, the details count. This time it was against us, because the VAR did not observe it and it was decisive for what happened next”.
