The activity for Diego Elías (No. 6 in the PSA ranking) does not stop and this Wednesday he shone again at the Gillenmarkets Canary Wharf Classic 2022 squash, managing to advance to the semifinal. The Peruvian athlete did not have it so easy against the Swiss Nicolas Mueller, but he knew how to impose conditions, after three tight games.

The national athlete was motivated by beating Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet 2-0 in the second preliminary round and came out with everything in the quarterfinal bracket. From the beginning, the racket player sought victory and obtained the partial advantage, with a resounding 11-5. The ticket to the next stage was close.

However, Nicolas Mueller reacted in the best way and leveled the series, after winning 8-11. Everything was defined in the third set and Diego Elías showed confidence, as well as a lot of precision and concentration, to be able to ensure his victory: he settled the match 11-9. The crash lasted a total of 45 minutes.

In this way, the Peruvian athlete will play the semifinal this Thursday against the Egyptian Mostafa Asal (No. 4 in the PSA ranking), who eliminated the Welshman Joel Makin 2-1 (with partials of 11-9; 11-13 and 11-8). It is worth mentioning that our representative comes from being runner-up in the Optasia Championship 2022 a few days ago.

After the victory, Diego Elías spoke and did not hide his emotion: “This was a great match. ‘Nicci’ had been playing really well, he had some amazing shots after the first set and I was struggling a bit. I’m happy that in the end I played better and was able to win this bracket”.

I started warming up at 8:00 pm and got to the court at 10:00 pm, so I was really excited to keep going, but I guess my energy went down and I’m happy I was able to win this match. It’s always hard to play a game after waiting so long.”, added the national athlete.

Finally, Diego Elías referred to the upcoming clash with Mostafa Asal: “It’s going to be a tough matchup. I just need to go back and do all my recovery. I think it will be a good match, so I just want to be at my best level”.
