The end of April and the beginning of May were positive for the man from Lima because he reached the semifinals in Argentina and this earned him a rise to 104th place (the best position in his history). With that motivation, the 26-year-old appeared in action at the Challenger Aix in France during the first week of May.

The Peruvian racket debuted against the Italian Andrea Pellegrino in the tournament that takes place in Provence, southeast of France. The 2-1 victory of the national allowed them to access the round of 16 of the competition. However, Varillas fell for the same result against the local Gregoire Barrere on May 4. In fact, that had been the last time for him on the courts.
