Luis Enrique defends his goalkeeper after a reckless exit: “I don’t know any other way to play”

The Spanish team achieved its first victory in Group 2 of League A of the UEFA Nations League, after beating Switzerland 1-0, on the third date. However, the result was in danger shortly after the end, after a false start by goalkeeper Unai Simón, when he tried to clear the ball.

The incident occurred at 86 minutes, when the Swiss team had a goal kick, which Yann Sommer executed with a long shot. Haris Seferovic was ready to control the ball, but he had a dispute before doing so: he was marked by the ‘Red’ goalkeeper, who left his area due to the overtaking of his defense.

Although the Swiss striker was thrown off balance by Unai Simón, he was able to get up immediately and continued his attack, passing to Breel Embolo. The new owner of the ball did not hesitate for a moment and shot towards the empty goal, although he did not have enough precision to inflate the nets.

Calmness came for the Spanish team and the goalkeeper explained to his teammates the reason why he acted dangerously. After the game, and with the victory in his pocket, coach Luis Enrique was asked about his goalkeeper’s criticized decision and was surprised by his response.

It never makes me nervous. None of the three goalkeepers. We need the person in charge of this position to generate the first superiority. Unai Simón does it spectacularly. He makes mistakes like Pepe, Lucas, Manolo el del Bombo”, explained the strategist at a press conference.

I don’t know any other way to play and I don’t want to. It is what it is. We did not go out with balls and we have assimilated it. If you don’t see another solution, of course you can opt for that, but it’s not the way to play”, Luis Enrique sentenced, in defense of his direction.
