Gaël Monfils and Elena Svitolina become parents

A little sweetness in this world of brutes… The Frenchman Gaël Monfils (38th player in the world), absent from the tennis courts since mid-August, and his wife, the Ukrainian Elena Svitolina (fallen to 164th in the world), announced on Saturday to have become the parents of a little girl named Skaï.

“I had the most incredible night of my life, which ended with the most incredible gift at 6:00 am. Elina was strong and brave. I can only thank my wife and God for this special moment. Welcome to the world my little princess Skai, ”Monfils, 36, posted on social media on Saturday.

“What a night,” Svitolina wrote on social media. “Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to Skaï Monfils”, she adds before thanking her husband for “living this unforgettable moment with (her)”.

A troubled year due to the war in Ukraine

Injured in the foot during the round of 16 of the Masters in Montreal (Canada), Monfils has not appeared on a court since August 11. He had to give up the US Open, then the group stage of the Davis Cup, from September 14 to 18. Its end of the season, of which the Paris Masters 1000 is the high point (October 29 to November 6), seems compromised. Monfils reached the final of the Paris tournament in 2009 and 2010.

Elena Svitolina, former world No.3, retired from the circuit after the Masters 1000 in Miami at the end of March. She lived a tormented year due to the war in Ukraine, her country. “Mentally it’s exhausting to see all these terrible things happening to people, and not knowing what’s going to happen tomorrow or in an hour, it’s very scary,” she told AFP on 11 may.

On March 1, she indicated that she was donating her winnings from the Monterrey (Mexico) tournament to the Ukrainian army, a week after the outbreak of the Russian invasion. Svitolina was born in Odessa, where part of her family resides. The city located on the shores of the Black Sea, in southern Ukraine, is a strategic point in the conflict. It has been shelled several times by Russian forces.
