Simeone had no interest in signing Cristiano: “The little birds told anything”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s intention was to leave Manchester United in the last transfer window, prior to the start of the 2022-23 season, and one of the teams with which he was linked was Atlético Madrid. However, the possibility of signing did not go beyond rumors and, months later, Diego Simeone, DT of the ‘Colchoneros’, decided to clarify the issue.

The Argentine coach was interviewed by Martín Liberman, for Tigo Sports Costa Rica, and revealed that there was never any real interest in hiring the experienced Portuguese striker. “The little birds anything far from what has happened”started the ‘Cholo’ regarding the subject.

“People speak sometimes to tell what they want to tell, not reality”, added Simeone, highlighting that there were no options to sign with ‘CR7’, despite the information circulating in the press. In the same way, the strategist explained that the striker has a very strong relationship with Real Madrid to think that he could reach ‘Atleti’.

“A fan yelled a great phrase at me during a preseason game, when I didn’t know anything about what was happening, but I did because of the rumours: ‘Diego, be careful, the Champions League is not at all costs’. I liked that reflection, because it is very healthy, from an amateur, from the heart and reflecting what I felt at the time of him, beyond not denying Cristiano’s history “indicated the ‘Cholo’.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is an absolute benchmark for Real Madrid. I wouldn’t see Martín Palermo or Juan Román Riquelme playing in River Plate or Ariel Ortega in Boca Juniors. There are situations that are very clear.”said the technician.

Finally, Diego Simeone clarified that the possibility of the arrival of ‘CR7’ would not have been anything similar to that of Luis Suárez at the time, when he left the ranks of Barcelona. “It’s not the same for how ‘Lucho’ arrived as if Cristiano had arrived”sentenced the coach of Atlético Madrid.
