Wojciech Szczesny was the figure of the Polish team, despite the defeat (0-2) against Argentina in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The goalkeeper prevented his team from losing by more goals difference with great saves and even saved a penalty to Lionel Messi in a very controversial decision by the referee.
At 38 minutes, the goalkeeper went out to cut a cross, but collided with the ‘Albiceleste’ captain. After being called by the VAR, the judge checked the action and decided to charge a foul. Then, the ’10’ stopped in front of the ball, however, the goalkeeper guessed the direction of the shot.
After the end of the game, the goalkeeper revealed that he had spoken with the “Flea” in the middle of the review of the video arbitration. “I bet Messi 100 euros that the referee was not going to give a penalty, so I lost a bet with Messi”he pointed out in conversation with the press.
Although, the 32-year-old athlete confessed that he will not comply with the bet. “I don’t know if it is allowed, maybe they will sanction me. I’m not going to pay him, he already has enough money”added the goalkeeper who plays for Juventus.
It is important to mention that it is not the first time that the Polish goalkeeper saves a penalty in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Wojciech Szczesny also turned off Salem Al-Dawsari’s goal cry during the match against Saudi Arabia.
