According to reports from Germany, Chelsea are expected to announce the appointment of Christopher Vivell as new technical director soon.

The west London club’s new owners have overhauled their recruiting squad since their purchase earlier this year, with the departures of the likes of Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech leaving a huge void.

Chelsea have been working on a deal to sign ex-RB Leipzig boss Vivell since late September, with the German terminating his contract with the Bundesliga club on October 7.

At the time, Vivell’s departure was attributed to “different, contrasting views” about the rest of the Leipzig hierarchy, despite talks already underway with Chelsea about a move to Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old has signed a long-term contract and will head Chelsea’s new recruiting team, although the club is also looking for a new sporting director.

You were closely associated with Vivell’s Leipzig colleague Christoph Freund, although both he and former Liverpool recruiting chief Michael Edwards have turned down the role.

The sporting director will have a broader remit and will sit above the football structure – acting as a bridge to ownership and overseeing other areas such as the academy – while Vivell will focus more specifically on recruitment.

He is one of many new additions to the department in recent months and will be joined by four others who focus on data and scouting.

Joe Shields was recently appointed Co-Director of Recruitment, while Paul Winstanley joined the club from Brighton last month in a new capacity as Director of Global Talent and Transfers.

Laurence Stewart, who was in Monaco, has focused on global football, while Kyle Macaulay has worked more closely with manager Graham Potter, while also swapping the south coast for Stamford Bridge.

Co-owner Todd Boehly was keen to bring Vivell’s expertise to the club and both he and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali have made it a priority to establish a world-class leadership team to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
