Ander Herrera says leaving Manchester United was ‘painful’ (MUTV)

Ander Herrera burst into tears after describing his departure from Manchester United as “painful”.

The midfielder spent five seasons with United and helped the club win the Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup during his time at Old Trafford.

But Herrera, now on loan at Paris Saint-Germain’s Athletic Bilbao, admits he was unhappy with United over the way United handled his 2019 departure.

The Spaniard believes he ‘deserved’ a new contract after winning United’s Player of the Year award in 2017, but the club decided not to renew, allowing him to leave on a free transfer two years later.

In an interview with MUTV, which will be published in full on Monday, Herrera began to cry when asked if he was emotional about leaving United and that the 33-year-old needed a break from filming.

“It was hard to leave because six months ago, five months ago, I was expecting that offer to stay,” Herrera told MUTV.

“I don’t want to, it’s not the time to talk badly about anyone and I won’t, but after my third season at the club I expected a little more from the club at this point.

“I was voted player of the year by the fans and the club didn’t call me this summer to sign a new contract, but they did call me with other players. That honestly hurt me.

“I think I deserve it and they don’t. Then circumstances changed because I wasn’t happy with that little moment with the club.

“People go through the club but the club and the badge remain the same so I could never say a bad word about the club because I am so, so grateful.

“But that hurt a little bit. At the end of season three, three titles, player of the year, and they didn’t call me in the summer, so I felt a little bit down.

“And then they called me when I had one more year contract and they were not the right thing for me. I fight for the club until the last day, no problem at all, I kept my contract until the last day.

“But they didn’t come at the right time in my opinion and in my agent’s opinion and also in my family’s opinion.”
