Jamie Redknapp has criticized England’s World Cup campaign, claiming that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard would “do as well” as current Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

England failed to end the long wait for a World Cup trophy in Qatar after Southgate’s side lost to eventual runners-up France in the quarter-finals.

The Three Lions impressed in the group stage – beating Iran 6-2 on their way to breakaway B – and proved too strong for Senegal in the round of 16.

But England fell to 2018 winners France in a narrow quarter-final, meaning the team have now failed to lift a trophy in three major tournaments under Southgate.

Despite the lack of silverware, Southgate has been widely praised for leading England to a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final and a Euro 2020 final, but Redknapp is less enthusiastic about the 52-year-old.

Redknapp believes Southgate’s in-game management has cost England in Qatar, saying “any Premier League manager” – including Everton boss Lampard and former Aston Villa manager Gerrard – “could do as well” as Southgate .

He told Sky Sports: “He’s done a good job Gareth Southgate. But we shouldn’t think there’s nobody else there. There will be a lot of good managers who would do just as well.

“Any young English Premier League coach worth his money would have taken England to the quarter-finals if you look at the teams we’ve played against.

“During the 2018 World Cup we had a lot of byes. We are playing against a good team in Croatia and they beat us. We are playing against a good team at this World Cup and they beat us.

“At the last European Championship we beat two decent teams in Denmark and Germany, but neither of them came out of the group at this World Cup.

“If you looked at the candidates now you would see Graham Potter at Chelsea, Eddie Howe doing great at Newcastle. Frank Lampard, who has a great history as an England player, plays at Everton. It didn’t work for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, but any of them could have done as well as Southgate.

“Gareth isn’t crazy, he knows there’s a European Championship where we have a big chance to win and we’re getting better – so why give up the baton and give someone else that chance? He thought: ‘I can do this job better get it fast unless someone else does it and really succeeds.”

“Now Gareth has got that chance again – make the most of it. Let’s not be satisfied with the quarter-finals, we can expect more.

Referring to the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign, former England star Redknapp added: “I don’t agree that England have had a very good World Cup.

Reaching the quarter-finals was not a great achievement and I don’t think we should celebrate that.

“We could have done a lot more with the team and the depth we have. The substitutions we made weren’t fast enough and we took the wrong players off.”

Southgate admitted he was “conflicted” about his future as England manager after Qatar’s exit from the World Cup, but the FA has since confirmed he will stay until at least Euro 2024.

“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate will remain as England manager and lead our Euro 2024 season,” said FA boss Mark Bullingham.

Gareth and Steve Holland [assistant manager] have always had our full support and our planning for the euro starts now.”
