World: Lions of Atlas greeted like heroes on their return to Morocco

They were greeted as heroes. After an incredible epic that led them to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, the Atlas Lions received tens of thousands of Moroccans in Rabat.

A dense, joyful crowd of all ages and backgrounds gathered late Tuesday afternoon along the route of a red double-decker bus carrying the people of Walid Regraga from the airport to the avenues of the center of the Moroccan capital.

“I came to celebrate the beautiful history of Morocco at the World Cup, and even if some of the decisions of the judges were unfair,” said Adam Naja, 27, a restaurant waiter who traveled from Meknes, more than 150 km from Rabat, to “live this historical day. “I am proud of the team. Who knows ? We will win the cup, maybe next time,” he hopes.

Ceremony with King Mohammed VI

While waiting for hours, many supporters wore the flag and scarlet jerseys of the Sheriff Kingdom. Smoke bombs were blown up in front of the station.

The entire team, dreamed of by all of Morocco and beyond, having accomplished an unprecedented feat for an African or Arab team, was to be received in the evening by King Mohammed VI for a “ceremony of welcome and celebration in recognition of his historic achievement.”
