Virgil Van Dijk and his later days, after being eliminated from the World Cup against Argentina

The 2022 World Cup ended with the victory of the Argentine team, but there are still some footballers who try to overcome the blow of being eliminated in the final instances. One of them is Virgil Van Dijkwho, in the penalty shootout, missed the first shot against ‘Dibu’ Martínez.

In an interview for the ‘Viaplay’ chain, the 31-year-old central defender was able to open up about what he felt in that match for the World Cup semifinals: the frustration of being eliminated and how to get up after being so close to the goal. “I couldn’t sleep for two days after that game,” he confessed.

“You are so close, even after trailing 2-0. Unfortunately, you miss an important throw. It hurts a lot, I had a very hard afternoon and night”, added the Liverpool player.

“I disconnected from football for a while and took the opportunity to be with the family. It is the most important thing in life ”, Van Dijk concluded by clarifying, when asked what his refuge was after the harsh elimination.

At the moment, the Dutch captain is already under the mandate of Jurgen Kloop and was able to score a goal in the 3-1 victory of ‘The Reds’ against Aston Villa in the Premier League.
