Graham Potter failed to convince Chelsea that he was the right man for the club after a string of dismal results.
The former Brighton manager is under heavy pressure at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
It was the low point of a deteriorating season for the Blues, who have won just two of their last 14 games in all competitions.
After replacing Thomas Tuchel in the early stages of the season, Potter was given time to settle in West London.
The board accepts that this is a unique season in Chelsea’s recent history, given the club’s takeover and spending of £600 million.
Potter is loved by the Chelsea players and they understand his plight, acknowledging that he is far from the only problem in West London.
Despite this, the Evening Standard says the side have doubts about his ability to get through such a difficult time and whether he is the right man for the Blues.
After losing 1-0 to Dortmund in the first leg, Chelsea must come from behind to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
But they face a game against rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, where Antonio Conte could bring further misery to his former side.
The Blues hope to have Thiago Silva and Reece James available for selection again.
