Diego Elías is the leader of the PSA squash world ranking

Diego Elías will appear on Monday, April 3 as the best squash player in the world. The Peruvian athlete will go on to lead the ranking of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) after the Egyptian Mohamed ElShorbagy fell in the second round of the Optasia Championship in London.

Diego Elías had three options to go on to lead the ranking with what happened at the Optasia Championships. He needed to win so as not to depend on anyone. Reaching the final was also worth it, as long as ElShorbagy is not the champion. The third option, the one that ended up happening, is that the Egyptian Mohamed ElShorbagy should not reach the semifinals.

Diego Elías lost in the second round of the tournament, so it seemed that his options were falling, but ElShorbagy also lost in the second round this Thursday. He lost to Englishman Charlie Lee 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9), giving Diego Elías the third point he needed to become the leader of the ranking.

The PSA World Squash Rankings Forecast portal takes Diego Elías’ rise to first place in the ranking for granted, making him the first South American to reach the top of world squash. The Colombian Miguel Ángel Rodríguez had become fourth, Diego Elías hit the ceiling.

A leg injury prevented Diego Elías from continuing in the Optasia Championships, so he decided to retire in the fourth set. It is hoped that he can recover so that he is at the British Open in April and can defend his place at the top of world squash.
