Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara face Liverpool’s highly anticipated return against Arsenal on Sunday.

Colombia international Diaz has not played since October after a knee injury, but has been training since mid-March.

Jurgen Klopp has approached his return cautiously, but has resisted a tendency to involve him in recent games against Manchester City and Chelsea.

But after coming out of training unscathed on Thursday, a return against the Gunners could be on the line.

Thiago has been unavailable since the beginning of February, but has been training all week. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Spain international is expected to return to the squad if he continues to ramp up his return over the next 48 hours.

Klopp made a number of changes to his starting line-up ahead of midweek’s goalless draw with Chelsea, with Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson all dropped to the bench.

Salah was not pictured during Thursday’s training session, but according to the Liverpool Echo, he was among a small group of players who were given a second rest day ahead of the leaders’ visit.

Virgil van Dijk also missed the match against Chelsea due to illness, but the central defender is expected to be fit again on Sunday.

“Yes, yes, yes,” said Klopp when asked if he expected the Dutch captain to return against Arsenal. “He has been ill, but we still have a few days until the weekend.”

After a goalless draw at Chelsea and a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City last Sunday, Liverpool are eighth in the table, 10 points clear of the top four.

Arsenal go to Anfield eight points ahead of number two Manchester City, which still has a game to go. The Gunners have not won the league since Liverpool in September 2013 and Gary Neville is supporting Mikel Arteta’s side to go on and win the league as they finish that run this weekend.

“If Arsenal go to Anfield and win I would definitely say it will be their title because the confidence that comes from that will be incredible. If they lose at Anfield it will be a very exciting race,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Our manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) would say to us: if you beat Liverpool at this time of year and fight for the title and win, you win the league. That has often been the case.”
