“MasterChef Argentina”: the criticized version of Peruvian cebiche presented by a participant of the ‘reality’

The 2023 edition of “MasterChef Argentina” arrived at its 13th gala and the 7 participants who stood out in the week faced a new challenge in which two of them opted for well-known Peruvian dishes, although the results were not the best.

Agustín Sampietro (gynecologist) and Juan Francisco Moro (lifeguard) opted for a cebiche and a tiradito (the latter served with a version of causa Lima) for the challenge of the week that consisted of cooking dishes inspired by the 7 deadly sins.

The cooking show, hosted by Wanda Nara, began its edition on April 5 with the presentation of the challenge. Each of the contestants was given an envelope containing a card with one of the sins: lust, envy, pride, gluttony, etc.

After being assigned a sin, the participants were assigned a fish as follows:

  • Amberjack (for Achilles)
  • Bream (for Juan Ignacio)
  • Palometa (for Candelaria)
  • Nice (for Augustine)
  • Chernia (for Antonio)
  • Sole (for Francisco)
  • White salmon (for Rodrigo)

Each of the contestants had to use the assigned fish as the main ingredient of the dish that had to represent the deadly sin that had touched them on the envelope.

In this way, Juan Francisco used sole to prepare a dish that represented lust. His dish was called “Lustful Tongue” and it was a “tiradito of sole with mashed potatoes, yellow pepper, coriander and red sauce”. Damián Betular, one of the show’s judges, asked the participant if the potato base was a Peruvian cause, to which the contestant answered in the affirmative. “I don’t even take the taxi to go to the restaurant (to eat this dish that you have prepared), I don’t leave the house. The taste is half warm,” said the judge.

The criticized cebiche of “MasterChef Argentina 2023”

Agustín Sampietro had to represent laziness on a plate using tuna. The dish that he presented was a cebiche, which he called “Isla bonita”. As he later explained to the juries, he thought that this dish could represent laziness because it has few ingredients and it is a snack that he usually orders for delivery to watch series on a weekend.

Agustín’s version of the cebiche had a leche de tigre with wasabi, in addition to the classic sweet potato he added peanuts and the corn was presented roasted.

The leche de tigre on his plate caught the eye of the jurors due to its particular purple color. “Barney’s ceviche seems. Why is it purple?” asked Damián. The participant said it was due to the red onion.

“More than laziness, (your dish) is inexperience,” said Germán Martitegui, another member of the jury, after trying Agustín’s cebiche. “It is without taste, without anything. There is laziness there”, continued the evaluator.

After the presentations of the dishes, it was time to choose the best and worst of the night.

The cebiche almost led him to elimination

The two best of the night were Antonio (who took a silver medal) and Rodrigo (gold medal).

Rodrigo and Antonio, the best of the night.

The worst of the night would take the “black apron”, a symbol that he would immediately go to the elimination gala on Sunday.

Those named as “the worst dishes” of the gala were Agustín’s cebiche and Candelaria’s dish, who despite having attracted positive attention at the beginning of the competition could not materialize his idea of fish and chips with pomfret.

Having been the one that most disappointed the jury, Candelaria received the black apron and Agustín was saved and continues in the competition.
