Chelsea have been in contact with three goalkeepers while Stamford Bridge bosses Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard are looking to replace Mendy this summer.

The Blues spent nearly £100 million on Arrizabalaga and Mendy, but neither has suggested they can become Chelsea’s number 1 in the long run.

Arrizabalaga became the most expensive goalkeeper in history when he joined Athletic Bilbao for £72 million in 2018, but the Spaniard fell after a series of errors and was replaced by Mendy.

Mendy was signed during Frank Lampard’s first spell as manager – he returned as caretaker manager earlier this month – on the advice of legendary Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Senegal international Mendy went on to win the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel, but he too was dropped earlier in the season when Graham Potter reinstated Arrizabalaga as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Arrizabalaga has improved after his early struggles at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea bosses are unconvinced by either goalkeeper and plan to use a new shot-stopper this summer.

Chelsea have contacted representatives for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Brentford’s David Raya as they have set their sights on a new number 1, according to the Evening Standard.

However, the situation is complicated by the fact that Chelsea still don’t know who will lead the team next season, with Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique leading the way.

Chelsea’s reservations about Mendy and Arrizabalaga have prompted the club to halt contract talks with the former, telling rival clubs that the latter is up for sale this summer.

Arrizabalaga had another disappointing mid-week performance in Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, but Lampard has confirmed the 28-year-old will start in Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton.

“I don’t see any reason to do anything else at the moment,” Lampard said of Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation during his pre-match press conference.

“Kepa’s performance and maturity of course. I may have matured as a coach when I came back, he has matured as a player and I think he’s in good shape and Edou has had a few injuries.

“He has a little one with him at the moment, so the position as you see it doesn’t change and now judges everything on my previous time at the club, unlike what awaits me now.”
