For the death of Diego Maradona: the eight defendants will go to trial

The Argentine justice system confirmed this Tuesday the elevation to oral trial for the eight health professionals accused of the death of star Diego Maradona that occurred on November 25, 2020, a source in the case reported.

The Appeals Chamber resolved that the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, the psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and the other six defendants, be tried for “simple homicide with eventual intent”, in a process that has not yet started.

The defenses had appealed to the appellate court with the aim of changing the cover of the case for a lighter accusation, but the Chamber ratified the classification of the crime that has penalties of between 8 and 25 years in prison.

In his request to bring the case to an oral trial, the judge in the case, Orlando Díaz, had taken the prosecutor’s report which described the work of the medical team that treated Maradona as “reckless” and “deficient”.

In his resolution, the judge questioned “the conduct that each of the defendants (defendants) would have displayed, not complying with the mandate to act that good medical practice placed in their heads.”

The eight defendants will arrive at the oral trial in freedom, in a process that is speculated could start only in 2024.

In addition to Luque and Cosachov, the psychologist Carlos Ángel Díaz, the coordinating doctor Nancy Forlini, the nurse coordinator Mariano Perroni, the clinical doctor Pedro Pablo Di Spagna and the nurses Ricardo Omar Almirón and Dahiana Gisela Madrid are accused.

Maradona, considered one of the best footballers in history and an emblem of the Albiceleste team, died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 in his sickbed, convalescing from surgery for a bruise on his head suffered in a home accident. .

The death occurred when the former captain of the selected champion in Mexico 1986 was under home hospitalization, in a residence in a private neighborhood of Tigre, 40 km north of Buenos Aires.
