Tottenham Hotspur have sacked interim boss Cristian Stellini after Newcastle United’s “completely unacceptable” 6-1 defeat on Sunday.

The Italian was temporarily in charge after the departure of Antonio Conte at the end of March.

Tottenham Hotspur have won just one of their last four games since being appointed, a streak that culminated in Sunday’s humiliating defeat at St James’ Park as the visitors went five goals down in 21 minutes.

Ryan Mason, who was previously in charge of the team following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in April 2021, will now be in charge until the end of the season.

Mason’s first game in charge is at home against Manchester United on Thursday.

In a statement released on Monday evening, club president Daniel Levy explained that the decision is a result of Sunday’s “devastating” result, which damaged Tottenham’s hopes of a top-four finish.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was totally unacceptable,” said Levy.

“It was terrible to watch. We can think of many reasons why it happened and while I, the board, the coaches and players all have to take responsibility together, the responsibility ultimately rests with me.

Cristian will resign from his current position together with his technical staff. Cristian intervened at a difficult point in our season and I would like to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff behaved in such a challenging moment. We wish him and his staff all the very best.

Ryan Mason will take over as head coach effective immediately. Ryan knows the club and the players well. We will release more information about his coaching staff in due course.

“I met with the players’ committee today – the team is determined to work together to finish the season as strongly as possible. We all realize that we have to deliver performances that deserve your strong support.”

Tottenham Hotspur are looking for their third new permanent manager in two years, with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann one of the favorites for the role after he stepped down to become Chelsea’s new manager.

Mauricio Pochettino has also been strongly linked with a return to North London, but the Argentine would now be closing in on the vacant Stamford Bridge job.
