Jak Jones has already endured some major trials on his way to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, so he’s unfazed as he prepares to face ‘player of the season’ Mark Allen in the last eight.

The 29-year-old is enjoying an incredible Crucible debut after doing a fantastic job in qualifying, beating Adam Duffy, Robbie Williams and Barry Hawkins.

That fine victory over the Hawk was the biggest win of his career at the time, but he has since surpassed it not once, but twice with major setbacks in the Crucible.

A 10-6 win over Ali Carter in the last 32 was followed by a 13-7 win over Neil Robertson to easily beat the two seeded players.

He could be tested more rigorously by Allen, who has won three GC titles this season, but Jones, who is going all out, needn’t worry.

“Mark is the best player of the season and he’s playing extremely well,” said Jones. However, Neil also played extremely well, as did Ali Carter for the tournament.

“It’s all very difficult matches, whoever I’m playing against. I’ll just do my best and see where it takes me.’

Jones is enjoying the time of his snooker life after some rough times in the game, stopping twice on tour and struggling to deliver his best work when it comes down to it.

He left Wales during his career to move to Sheffield and develop his game, but is now back home and seems to have struck gold on the green leaf.

Speaking of his impressive composure, he said: “I suppose it’s just about all I’ve probably experienced in the game since turning pro at 16, lots of lows, but I feel like I’m not letting the experience go like that like those hits, like maybe other debutants, but I don’t know.

“I feel like I’m closer to playing my exhibition games in matches. If you can make it in the Crucible, that’s a bonus.”

Jones and Allen play over three sessions for a spot in the semi-finals of Crucible, which start Tuesday morning.
