A new sponsor and more than 100 thousand dollars in prize: the other victories of Varillas at Roland Garros

ESPN interviews him, Juan Pablo Varsky himself tweets about him and specialist Luis Alfredo Álvarez releases historical data on the Peruvian’s participation. Juan Pablo Varillas has managed to get people talking about him for some time and now it has become popular with his participation in Roland Garros.

There are more than 3.5 million results on Google for a search with his name, his followers on Instagram increased by more than a thousand in just one day and brands like Lotto, Diners Club and DirecTV verify that his bet is correct and publicly congratulate him.

“Juan Pablo deserves this moment for all the work behind it, for how professional and humble he is,” Alfredo Valverde, director of Igma Sports, the agency that manages Varillas’ career, briefly told us.

the other game

And Juan Pablo’s other victory is to strengthen the sponsorships that make him one of the world’s tennis elite. Alfredo himself tells us that with the good results he is having, it has already been possible to sign an agreement with a new brand that is committed to him.

“Since their results on the ATP South American Tour, relationships have been strengthened. This has allowed us to close a very important contract with Renault and strengthen relationships with DirecTV and Diners Club. The relationship with Wilson, his sports accessories brand, and Lotto, the brand that dresses him, has continued to be more robust ”, Alfredo tells us about the commercial side of the Peruvian. Added to these brands is ISDIN, a brand of skin protection creams against the sun.

Precisely, yesterday the national tennis player already appreciated the presence of Renault in his career. A story about him on social networks that can be seen by almost 25,000 people -his followers-, as well as people looking for information about the Peruvian.

“In sports we support athletes like Juan Pablo Varillas. In tennis we also sponsor the Challenger Lima because we want Peru to be a power again in tennis”, Pio Rosell, CEO of Diners Club in Peru, told us a few weeks ago.

To this is added the important ‘price money’ that he achieves at Roland Garros. For reaching the second round, he earns 97,000 euros, to which are added 17,000 for participating in the first round of doubles (more than 120,000 dollars in total), in which he was defeated yesterday along with the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

A tennis player’s budget for an ATP tour is multiplied compared to the Challenger tour, since large tournaments require traveling to different cities around the world and for this he has to travel with his technical team and requires per diems to work comfortably. As a minimum to travel, about 150 thousand dollars are required to be present in various tournaments throughout the year.

For this he has had to work a lot. Last year reminded us that they have been years of effort. “I work for what I am achieving. One sees how beautiful, you don’t see the other, that I had six years playing futures, four-five years 600-500 in the world without earning any dollar, always at a loss ”, he told us in 2022.

and the ranking

And everyone wonders how far Juan Pablo Varillas can go. He already told us himself, that he has the level to fight in the world tennis elite, but that it is a new level for him. “There are players who are better at that moment or with more experience and maybe I’m going to lose more than I’m going to win. But it is to be patient ”, he told us a few months ago, after reaching the semifinals at the ATP in Buenos Aires. And about facing challenges like the Masters and Grand Slam, he took it easy: “I take it as a challenge, as a way to measure myself with the highest level of tennis today,” he declared.

With his two victories at Roland Garros, Juan Pablo Varillas has risen to 77th place in the live ranking -the final one comes after the Parisian open, on Monday June 12-, and he can continue ascending if he wins a match again, since the round 3 delivers 90 points, like winning a Challenger Tournament, a tour in which he competed until last year.

“Today they have a level to get into the Top 50,” Sergio Galdos, who was his partner in the Peruvian national team in the Davis Cup, told us. One more victory at Roland Garros would put him in the top 60, but for that he will have to overcome the Pole Hubert Hurkacz in the third round, a match that must be played this Friday around 9:00 am

Despite yesterday’s defeat in the first round of doubles, a draw he entered as an alternate with Monteiro, Juan Pablo’s real competition is in the singles draw. Today against Hurkacz the pass to the second week of Roland Garros is played, the sporting accolade that this means and the thousands of euros that add up.
