student falls in a match where the referees forgot the regulations | CHRONICLE

In times when soccer is played with a ball and a magnifying glass, in Bogotá they forgot the regulations. Universitario fell 1-0 against Independiente Santa Fe in a match in which they ended up with 10 men due to the expulsion of Nelson Cabanillas, but in which the Colombian team was saved from the red due to an incredible attack.

The Chilean Felipe González on the field of play and the Uruguayan Mathías de Armas in the VAR forgot the rules of the game for a particular action that could determine the history of the match.

A university student risked his life in Colombian territory. A tie ensured that they would qualify at least for the playoffs against the third parties in the Copa Libertadores. But the field quickly tilted, first with the absurd expulsion of Nelson Cabanillas just after 11 minutes.

But the great controversy followed. In the 17th minute, Alex Valera suffered a foul by Marlon Torres, and while he was lying on the field, the Colombian defender touched him between the buttocks, recalling the episode that took place between Gonzalo Jara and Edinson Cavani in a Chile- Uruguay in the Copa America 2015.

The play was reviewed by the VAR, since a possible penalty with a red card was reported, but the decision was made to continue playing. Tremendous controversy, since Torres’ aggression was clear and in front of the referee.

And the regulation sanctions this type of play. In Rule 12 of Fouls and Incorrect Conduct, it is established in which cases a footballer must be warned or sent off and there is a point that says to the letter that it is an offense punishable with expulsion: “Use language or act in an offensive, insulting or humiliating way ”.

And it was exactly what Marlon Torres committed against Alex Valera, since the actions were stopped and he went directly to attack him.

And the precedent is precisely in the case of Gonzalo Jara. These were not VAR times, and on the field the referee Sandro Ricci sent off Cavani for hitting Jara, but what he did not see was the Chilean’s aggression, who put his hand between the Uruguayan’s buttocks.

Given the public evidence, Conmebol acted ex officio and the Disciplinary Committee decided to sanction Gonzalo Jara with three dates for his actions, thus missing the start of the Qualifiers.

Thus, in Bogotá, both González and De Armas made Santa Fe play with an extra man when it would have been fair to have a red card per side.

The match

It was a duel that was taking place for what the ‘U’ wanted, even with a goal disallowed by Valera due to a hand. But Cabanilla’s red card just after 11 minutes changed everything.

At 17, Hugo Rodallega’s goal came, which gave the Colombians peace of mind, who without much play, became the owners of the match because of the extra man.

With a local referee, the creams fell into despair and had no ideas to turn the story around, even less with the changes that Fossati proposed, taking out Polo to reinforce his defense.

Thus, the group is left with Goiás with 9 points, Universitario and Santa Fe equal in 7 points and Gimnasia already eliminated with only 4. In the last day, the creams must beat the Argentines to continue in the race. The result between Brazilians and Colombians will determine whether the Peruvians advance directly to the round of 16 (if Santa Fe wins by fewer goals than the U) or to the playoffs with the third of the Libertadores (if Goiás wins or the Colombians thrash).
