The season ends and the ‘Puma’ Diego Elías has left his mark very clear. He closed it at number 2 in the PSA squash ranking in the world, but he knew how to be the best of all for more than a month and reached milestones never seen before.
Yesterday, for example, he became the first South American to play in the final of the CIB PSA World Tour Finals, the tournament that brings together the best eight of the campaign. Five Egyptians (including ElShobagy, who was recently naturalized in England last year), a Frenchman, a New Zealander and a Peruvian. Yes, among the powers of the world is the Bicolor.
Unfortunately, Diego fell in the definition of The Finals against Mostafa Asal 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 3-11 and 5-11). “I am very happy with my performance after a difficult week and a difficult season”, assured the Peruvian, who accepted that he was tired after the demanding year.
The loss in the final and the fact that Ali Farag won a match in the group stage deprived the Peruvian of recovering the leadership of the ranking, in which he was between the end of April and the beginning of May. However, that does not mean that he has completed a great season finale.
Two Egyptians played in the final of the women’s draw and one in the men’s. In Cairo, the cradle of the best squash in the world, Elías planted the Peruvian flag.

First South American winner of the Masters Tournament, first player from this part of the continent to reach the top of the PSA ranking (the Colombian Miguel Ángel Rodríguez became number 4), and the first to reach the title fight in The Finals.
The holidays arrive for the eleventh professional season to begin in August. The one that has just brought him the best moments of his career: being number one, which he will remember forever along with his victory at the British Open Junior in 2013 and the gold medal in Lima 2019, according to what he told us.
Diego Elías will return to give us more happiness. A new season will begin, and Santiago 2023 is coming, another great challenge.
