Until a few weeks ago University of Sports was the great favorite to lead Group G of the South American Cup, and in this way get their classification to the round of 16. However, this scenario has faded due to the two consecutive defeats against Goiás and Independiente Santa Fe. Below we show you the possible scenarios for the ‘cream’ team.
Independiente Santa Fe won 2-0 against Universitario for the fifth round of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana, which will have a heart-stopping definition with four teams fighting for two places to the round of 16 on the last round of the zone.
With the victory, Santa Fe reached seven points, the same as Universitario has, but the Peruvians keep second place because they have scored one more goal in the group stage.
On the final date, agreed for the week of June 28, the Colombians will play the pass to the round of 16 at home against the Brazilian Goiás, leader of the Group with 9 units. Universitario will receive the Argentine Gimnasia La Plata in Lima, who is bottom with 4 points but still has chances to advance.
If University wins
This would be the ideal scenario for Jorge Fossati’s men. With three units he would ensure, at least, his pass to the playoffs (as long as Santa Fe wins by fewer goals). However, if this result is maintained, a defeat by Goías would put the ‘creams’ in first position, and therefore qualified for the round of 16.
If University tie
If they were left in a draw against Gymnastics, Ate’s men would jeopardize their permanence in the South American. Independiente Santa Fe, with which they currently remain even in the table, with a victory they would snatch second place. In the event that the Colombian team also draws, the qualifier for the playoffs would be defined by the goal difference.
If Universitario loses
Under this scenario, the ‘U’ would have to wait for Santa Fe to lose to Goiás, with a draw for the ‘coffee growers’, Fossati’s team bid farewell to the Copa Sudamericana. In addition, the ‘creams’ should lose by less than four goals against Gimnasia to access the playoffs (of course, counting on the defeat of the Bogota club).
