The president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF), Fernando Costa, announced this Tuesday that he will request the suspension of professional tournaments, on suspicion of match-fixing, bribery, illegal betting and alteration of the VAR.
“This president has received quite unpleasant information, with alarming content that would indicate that a corruption network has been set up in Bolivian soccer,” Costa said at a press conference.
According to the head of the federation, “some bad” leaders, referees and players “would be involved in violating fair play.”
Given the suspicions of corruption, he announced that he will convene the councils of the first division of soccer and the promotion tournament to propose “the stoppage and suspension” of both competitions.
Without revealing the origin, Costa said that he received information about “match fixing, bribery and betting” and that even “the VAR would have been contaminated in our football.”
He also announced that he will put the complaints under consideration by Bolivian justice, as well as by FIFA and Conmebol. “The consequences could be severe,” he said.
Bolivia is preparing to start the South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. It visits Brazil on September 8 and hosts Argentina four days later.
