Jhonnier Montaño Jr. after receiving nationality: “Proud to be another Peruvian”

The young footballer Jhonnier Montaño Jr. received this Friday the documentation that proves his Peruvian nationality in a ceremony held at the Immigration headquarters.

The midfielder, born in Colombia in 2004 and son of the remembered footballer Jhonnier Montañoshared photos on his Instagram account and claimed to feel “proud to be another Peruvian.”

Although he was summoned to the Colombian team on previous occasions, Montaño Jr., after receiving his new Peruvian DNI, is eligible to represent Peru in its different categories.

Jhonnier Montaño Jr. arrived at Deportivo Municipal in 2017, when he was 12 years old. Two years later he broke the record for the youngest person to play in the Peruvian Soccer Reserves Tournament. In 2021 he debuted in League 1 under the guidance of Franco Navarro, a coach who had coached his father in San Martín. He was 16 years and 131 days old when he made his appearance, breaking Matías Lazo’s record as the youngest player in the first division.

In recent years he has had a brief stint in Spanish football, playing for various teams and adding experience to his career.

He is currently training as a guest at Sporting Cristal, but at the same time he managed to obtain Peruvian citizenship in order not to occupy a foreigner’s quota in League 1, in addition to being eligible for the national team.

As El Comercio learned, Jhonnier Montaño Jr. trains as a guest with the U-18 team and is in talks with some clubs in the area.
