Luis Advíncula and the statistic that explains why his return against Chile is the best news for Juan Reynoso

The statistics will say that we have had other Peruvians with foreign teams in international finals. However, Luis Advíncula with Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores and Paolo Guerrero, with LDU de Quito, in the Copa Sudamericana, has the added value of ownership. They are not two footballers who alternate, they are two indisputable ones.

And that is definitely good news for Juan Máximo Reynoso, coach of the Peruvian team. Advíncula arrives with a very interesting accumulation of time in the field. The red and white sprinter reaches 2,738 minutes with the Xeneize team, which will face Fluminense on November 4 at the legendary Maracaná.

The former Sporting Cristal player belongs to the exclusive 2,000 minutes club in 2023. What does this mean? It is adding an average of more than 20 complete games in the season, which reveals ownership or at least an important alternation. And this, unfortunately, is an elusive good for many Peruvians who play for clubs abroad.

—Good defenses—

Advíncula’s campaign is commendable not only for even performances in the highest demand – starting the 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Palmeiras visiting Sao Paulo – but also for the fact that he has exhibited versatility every time Almirón has needed it. He contributed a goal as a winger in the first stage of the Libertadores and is closing in his traditional position as a winger.

Of course, despite the continuity, Advíncula is not the Peruvian soccer player with the most minutes in foreign leagues. That place continues to belong to Pedro Gallese, who has already accumulated 3,060 minutes with Orlando City.

Of those usually called up by Reynoso, it is the defenders who have the most mileage this season. Anderson Santamaría barely surpasses the 2,000 barrier (2,016 minutes) with the Atlas de México. Miguel Trauco already reaches 2,111 minutes with the San José Earthquakes of the MLS. Wilder Cartagena, defensive midfielder for Orlando City, has already played 2,168 minutes.

This statistic is also a reflection of the moment of the two-color team, with more certainty in defense than in attack. Despite his good time at LDU, Guerrero is still far from the 2,000 minute club, due to his replacement in Racing.

A player with less defensive duties with an interesting amount of minutes (2,283) is Sergio Peña, who was finally able to establish himself as a starter for Malmö in Sweden. It is highly probable that up to 90% of this 2,000-minute club will start against Chile and Argentina in the Qualifiers. Juan Reynoso not only measures talent, but also kilometers traveled.
