‘Dibu’ Martínez received the Yashin award for best goalkeeper of the year and was botched by some guests | VIDEO

Argentine Emiliano Martínez, starter with his team in winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper of the year, this Monday at the Ballon d’Or gala in Paris.

“What a surprise! I feel like crying,” Martínez said on stage after seeing his father Alberto appear, who was in charge of presenting him with the trophy.

“This is a gift for my career, although the important thing is to always win as a group. This is an addition to my career,” she noted in a speech accompanied by some boos.

In France he was accused after the World Cup final of disrespecting the ‘Bleus’ and their star Kylian Mbappé. The presenter of the event, the Ivorian Didier Drogba, even asked those present for calm so that Martínez could follow his intervention normally.

Draw‘ Martínez, a 31-year-old player from English Aston Villa, had already won the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper of the 2022 World Cup. He then starred in a controversial scene at the awards ceremony on the grass of the Lusail stadium by making an obscene gesture with the trophy, bringing it closer to his crotch.

Last February he also won the award for best goalkeeper at ‘The Best’ gala, organized by FIFA and also held in Paris.

In the 2022 World Cup, the Mar del Plata goalkeeper was key in the Albiceleste’s path to its third title in the main soccer tournament.

He made great saves and his team survived two penalty shootouts during the tournament, in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands and against France in the final, with Martínez taking center stage in both.

The Yashin Trophy has been awarded since 2019 by the French sports magazine France Football, the organizer of the Ballon d’Or, and is named after Lev Yashin, the ‘Black Spider’, a Soviet footballer frequently considered the best goalkeeper in history and who is the only goalkeeper to date to have won the Ballon d’Or, in 1963.

Previous winners of the Yashin Trophy were Brazilian Alisson Becker (2019), Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma (2021) and Belgian Thibaut Courtois (2022). In 2020 the award was not awarded due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“Seeing my name with all those phenomena is a source of pride. “They are archers that I admire,” he stated.
