What results do Alianza Lima and Universitario need today to win?

Alianza Lima vs Universitario star in a new edition of the Peruvian soccer classic in the final play off of Liga 1 Betsson, after winning the Apertura and Clausura, respectively. And after drawing 1-1 at the Monumental, they will resolve the season title in Matute in a duel with a reserved prediction. Find out below what results they need to become champions and add another star.

HOW IS THE LEAGUE 1 FINAL PLAY OFF DEFINED?

This is what the tournament rules say: “The clubs that qualify for the final play off will play round-trip matches. The club that has had the highest score in the accumulated standings will have the right to choose its turn to be local.”

“The club that obtains the most points in these two games of the final play off will be declared national champion of League 1 2023.”

“In the event of equal points at the end of the two games of the final play off, the club with the best goal difference will be declared national champion. If equality is maintained, the winner will be determined by a penalty shootout, in accordance with the Laws of the Game.”

WHAT AN ALLIANCE NEEDS TO CHAMPION

After tying on the hour with a goal from Gabriel Costa in Ate, Alianza Lima will be champion of Liga 1 Betsson 2023 and will achieve its first three-time championship in the professional era if it manages to beat Universitario in Matute by any result. If there is a tie again, the champion will be resolved in a penalty shootout.

WHAT THE U NEEDS TO BE A CHAMPION

Like Alianza, Universitario de Deportes must win to avoid penalties and become champion directly to forget the drought of titles that it drags on the verge of its centenary.

Universitario de Deportes and its classic rival, the two-time champion Alianza Lima, tied 1-1 this Saturday in the first leg for the title of the 2023 Peruvian first division tournament, in a packed Monumental stadium in the capital.

The ‘U’ opened the scoring at 63, through their striker Alex Valera via penalty, in a match in which the team was superior to Alianza Lima, consecutive champion of the Peruvian soccer tournament in 2021 and 2022.

The ‘creams’ were close to winning the match, but gave up the victory at the end of the match (90+4), through the Uruguayan naturalized Peruvian Gabriel Costa.

Some 65,000 fans of both teams and spectators filled the Monumental in Lima.

The return match is set for next Wednesday, November 8, at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, the bastion of the ‘aliancistas’, to define the champion of the 2023 tournament.

Uruguayan coach Mauricio Larriera, from Alianza Lima, acknowledged that his opponents were “superior” and that “the responsibility lies with the coach.”

“We achieved a very valuable result, based on the players’ rebellion and dedication, in a match that was difficult for us,” he said.

The last time that Universitario, a team that is almost 100 years old, was champion was in 2013. Alianza reached the final of the 2023 tournament as champion of the Apertura, while Universitario managed to become champion of the Clausura. The last time there was a classic for the title happened in 2009.
