Ecuador narrowly beat Chile in the Qualifiers

Ecuador got rid of the thorn of the 3-point reduction on the field by beating Chile 1-0 in Quito this Tuesday, in a long-suffering match for the sixth round of the 2026 North American World Cup Qualifiers. The Tricolor won at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado stadium with a goal from Ángel Mena, who punished the Chileans with a left foot in the 21st minute.

This victory has the flavor of revenge for the tricolors, from whom the TAS subtracted three points in the current tie after Chile’s complaint for the improper inclusion of the Ecuadorian defender Byron Castillo on the road to Qatar-2022 and with which the Roja intended to enter the contest.

The coach of the Ecuadorian soccer team, the Spanish Félix Sánchez Bas, gave a positive assessment of the 0-0 draw that his team drew this Thursday during their visit to Venezuela for the fifth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

“A point here is very difficult to get. It was a tough game (…). We tried to take the three points, we took one, but we value it positively,” said Sánchez after the match at the Monumental Stadium in Maturín.

“Perhaps we lacked the last pass to generate better chances, but the overall balance is good,” he analyzed at a press conference.

Two of Ecuador’s starters against Venezuela will be absent next Tuesday against Chile due to the accumulation of yellow cards, center back Piero Hincapié and midfielder José Cifuentes.

“They played a good game. They were very rigorous cards, especially Piero’s, but we have to accept the regulations,” the coach said at a press conference.

Sánchez Bas made a system change, moving to a 4-2-3-1, in a clash that faced with multiple casualties, among which Enner Valencia, Pervis Estupiñán and Carlos Gruezo stood out. The absence of John Yeboah due to a muscle tear was added at the last minute.

“We had already planned to play with this approach,” explained the coach. “John, unfortunately, yesterday had discomfort and he has not been able to travel (…), but this has not been the point for a change of system.”
